The most important question to answer as we enter this new decade

To me, the most important question to answer as we enter this new decade is how we now refer to time. Do we say “two-thousand-ten” or “twenty-ten”?

I propose that we say “twenty-ten” and I have some reasons for doing so.

1. Consistency – that’s how we’ve been doing it. In the 1900′s we said “nineteen-ninety-nine” not “one-thousand-nine-hundred-ninety-nine”.

2. Efficiency – it takes less time to say “twenty” than it does to say “two thousand”. “Twenty” is a two-syllable word whereas “two thousand” is a three syllable compound word. I think that the aggregate time saving benefit of everyone saying “twenty” instead of “two thousand” is self-evident.
