12 Ways to Receive 17 Rejections

I just received a network connection error while placing a telephone call. I figure it’s a good time to take a break from the phone.

I am calling local businesses to see if they are interested in my website design services. Here is how it has gone so far:

In just under an hour I made 17 calls, not counting the network connection error. So far, this has been the response:

  • The response from the very first call I made was, “I have enough business, I’m not worried about a website.”
  • 3 calls resulted in messages left with gatekeepers that promised to have the owner or manager call me back.
  • 3 calls resulted in leaving voicemails.
  • 2 calls resulted in gatekeepers giving me a better time to call back.
  • 1 call was a very bad connection. I think I heard a beep and left a voicemail.
  • 1 business owner had his website “under contract.”
  • 1 business was closed today and will reopen tomorrow
  • 1 busy signal
  • 1 hangup by a nice old lady
  • 1 no answer
  • 1 guy was in the process of selling his business and was not interested in a website
  • 1 guy doesn’t advertise. I didn’t mention to him that I found his phone number in the Yellow Pages and that he was lying.

I am verbally and psychologically drained at this point, but I need to press on and make some more calls.
