Thank you, Jesus, for answering even the most mundane prayers.

A week or so ago I cleaned my office. During this rare event I moved something that Amanda had placed in my office. It was something that she needed to teach her class. I placed it in a stack of her stuff on top of the file cabinet in my office closet. I figured that would be sufficient since it was now with her stuff.

I didn’t consider the fact that it was a rarely visited stack.

Time goes by.

Today, a few minutes before Amanda leaves, she comes to me and asks if I’ve seen this particular item. We discuss it briefly and get a little agitated with one another. We systematically destroy a few areas of the house looking for this imminently needed item. We finally decide that there’s no hope for it, but I agree to keep looking for it so that she can still use it on Monday.

I take a few minutes to check my email and deal with a few Nelwel items. Then I remember I need to put in some “looking time” for the missing item. I said a little prayer before I got going: “God, please show me where to look for it.” I’m not joking, the phrase “file cabinet” came to me. I opened the closet door and just stared at the file cabinet. I looked at the stack on top and saw a little bit of green (the color of the item) sticking out.

It was, of course, the missing item.

Thank you, Jesus.

A Special Day

A dozen years ago today a pretty seventeen-year-old girl was driving the two of us to a Wednesday evening youth service at the Sewell’s house. On that drive I summed up the courage to ask that girl – in the most awkward manner possible – if she would be my girlfriend. If you want all of the awkward details, just ask her about it. She absolutely loves to tell the story.

Does the Media Manipulate the Political Process?

Deep In the Enemy’s Council

Full disclosure: as far as the 2012 presidential race is concerned, I am currently supporting Ron Paul. I just saw an article at RonPaul2012.com entitled Cain Thinks the Fed Missing $9 Trillion Unimportant. The context of this headline is that Herman Cain doesn’t believe that the Federal Reserve’s inability to account for $9,000,000,000,000.00 is worth…

I do not counsel prudence -Gandalf

“Yet it is not our part to master all the tides of the world, but to do what is in us for the succour of those years wherein we are set, uprooting the evil in the fields that we know, so that those who live after may have clean earth to till. What weather they…

Am I Really a Christian?

In response to Michael McKinley’s article: How Can I Know That I’m Not a Christian? This is a question that should be answered with care. I would venture that someone asking this question, or one like it, is likely in turmoil because they are struggling with a sin they can’t shake. A sin that they feel…

Balancing Merging With Emerging

In response to Seth’s post: Merging/Emerging As a self-employed business owner I hope to grow to the point where I need to bring in more people to handle the work. I definitely see myself as an emerger and I would like to foster a culture of emerging within my business when the time comes. I have…

Confusing obedience with self-control

See Seth’s post here: http://sethgodin.typepad.com/seths_blog/2011/09/confusing-obedience-with-self-contro.html Seth, I don’t necessarily disagree with you. However, I do think that obedience begins with discipline and discipline is a building block for self-control. I think the reason that obedience doesn’t lead to self control is because these qualities are both effects of a related cause: discipline. Your thoughts?

Does the Bible Teach a Flat Earth?

One of my friends recently asked: Then the devil took him up to a very high mountain, and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in their magnificence, (Matthew 4:8) – How could this possibly have been so unless the Bible, holder of all knowledge, was very much telling the audience that the earth…

Good Friday

goodfriday

After we got home from our Good Friday service, my wife, Amanda Nelson, and I watched Good Friday together. It is very moving. We were kind of jarred by the abrupt ending – but then we realized that that is how we were supposed to feel. As the grave scene was drawing to a close…

Great Customer Service Experience From BB&T

BBT

I got a call this morning from a number I didn’t recognize. I was surprised to hear on the other end of the phone a nice lady named Tara. Tara is the branch manager of a local BB&T branch. I recently opened a business checking account with BB&T on their website. Tara called to see…

How to get your baby girl through her first year of life

I’ve done it, so now I can advise you. My little girl was born a year ago today. When my boy was born I didn’t think I could love anyone the way I loved him. And while that is true, I love my girl with an overwhelmingly strong – yet different – kind of love….

Black Friday is Thanksgiving’s Slap In The Face

Isn’t it ironic that on Thanksgiving we spend the day reflecting on what we’re thankful for (i.e. family and provision) and the next day many of us go out and spend the day (and money we don’t have) demanding more? Can we ever be satisfied with what we have?

Yet Another Thanksgiving Blog Post

If you are taking time to get online today, you have already seen a plethora of Thanksgiving blog, Facebook, and Twitter posts. Yesterday, I gave my list of the things I’m thankful for. Today, I would like to express thanks to the one to whom it all came from: the Father, the Son, and the…

So Much To Be Thankful For

Once again we prepare for the holiday season* as it creeps upon us without warning. I’m still trying to get over Christmas 2009 myself. Tomorrow, our family is planning to spend our Thanksgiving meal with the families of Family Promise of Anderson at Christ Church, EPC. I am looking forward to preparing my specialty: Pineapple…

Would you cheer for Jeter in a RedSox Uniform?

Yes! Based on my observations, Jeter is one of the classiest players out there. It would be nice to see a high profile Yankee come to the RedSox instead of the other way around for a change. Plus, it would renew the rivalry which has become a little stale these past few seasons. http://go.nelwel.net/xcxoAB
